![]() It is a very stripped down Linux distro which is packaged with a WindowsXP look-alike Desktop manager. Mint typically appeals to Windows users trying to learn Linux. There are multiple Backup Solutions available on the NAS, but you don't sound very confident in Linux, so I recommend that you stick to Backup Station, as it is documented for exactly what you want to do, and because you have an entire Community here that can assist you with it. It is specifically designed for doing Backups to your QNAP NAS. I have never even heard of FreeFileSync so I can't comment on it. I'm afraid I dislike Mint, so I've never played with it for more than a few hours. You can do RTRR (Replication) or simple Backups, that manual section I referred you to provides instructions for both strategies. And FreeFileSync for Linux Mint 18 is a Folder Comparison and Synchronization Software that Creates and Manages Backup Copies of all your Important Files. I have no idea what FTP Server Mint uses.
